Do You Support the Save Women’s Sports Act to Protect Fairness in Women’s Athletics?
Survey for the 28th Senatorial District
Recent headlines across the nation have highlighted debates about fairness in women’s sports, particularly regarding the participation of biological men in female sporting events. Cases such as the San Jose State’s volleyball team and legal battles in Arizona have brought these issues to the forefront, raising questions about the impact on female athletes and the opportunities Title IX has provided over the past half-century. Our state was at the forefront of this controversy when a biological male, who once competed for the men’s swim team, dominated many races competing in NCAA Division I events as part of the University of Pennsylvania women’s swimming team. The university now recognizes Lia Thomas as the first women’s swim team member to win a national championship in school history.
Many argue that allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports undermines fairness and diminishes opportunities that women have worked tirelessly to achieve. Due to inherent physiological differences, these situations can create an uneven playing field, potentially reducing female athletes’ chances to earn scholarships, gain recognition, and excel in competition.
The Save Women’s Sports Act seeks to address these concerns by designating athletic teams based on biological sex. The legislation would:
- Preserve the gains women have made under Title IX, which was enacted to end discrimination and create equal athletic opportunities for women.
- Ensure female athletes are not at an automatic disadvantage in competition.
- Protect athletic opportunities for women, from high school teams to collegiate scholarships.
Several lawmakers, including both outgoing Democratic U.S. Senator Bob Casey and newly elected Republican U.S. Senator Dave McCormick, have expressed support for protecting fairness in women’s sports. This bipartisan recognition emphasizes the importance of addressing this issue in a way that reflects the values of fairness and equal opportunity.
