In this update:
Remembering the Sacrifice of Our Northern York County OfficersLast weekend, our community came together to grieve, pray, worship, and lay a wreath of remembrance in honor of Northern York County Regional Police Department Officers Det. Sgt. Cody Becker, Det. Mark Baker, and Det. Isaiah Emenheiser. Funeral services were held Thursday at Living Word Community Church, where family, friends, and fellow officers paid their final respects. The service can be viewed on the church’s YouTube channel. As we continue to honor their sacrifice and hold their loved ones in our hearts, we must also be vigilant. Sadly, scammers are attempting to take advantage of our community during this difficult time. Please take a moment to review this warning from the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office about potential scams connected to donation drives. You can learn more here. May we never forget these officers, forever honor their service, and remain united in support of their families and our law enforcement community. PA Treasurer Announces Short-Term Funding for Head Start, County ServicesThe Pennsylvania Treasury Department will make $500 million available for Pennsylvania’s Head Start providers and county governments, helping to keep essential services funded while the 2025-26 state budget is finalized. The Senate approved a budget that would fund all state agencies and services at the levels from last year to allow the House, Senate and Gov. Josh Shapiro to reach consensus on a final product. The bill is currently stalled in the House of Representatives. The funds will be distributed via short-term, investment loans which recipients will be required to pay back following enactment of a state budget. Treasurer Stacy Garrity said that to be eligible for this program, Head Start providers and county governments must indicate the investment will be used for immediate operating expenses. More information is available from the Pennsylvania Treasury Department. Open Government: How to Access Senate Bills, Votes and MorePennsylvania Senate votes, debates, bills and much more can be accessed via the General Assembly’s website. Citizens can learn who represents them, read bills and amendments, review text of floor debates in the official Senate Journals, and see how senators voted on bills in committee and before the full Senate. The committee meeting schedule is also available, along with co-sponsorship memos and monthly expense reports for each senator. Senate sessions are livestreamed, and video from previous sessions is available back to Jan. 2025. Pennsylvania statutes (our state laws), the state constitution, recently enacted laws, rules and regulations (PA Code), the PA Bulletin, and more can be viewed by going to the Statutes section. My online office also contains information to provide greater transparency to my employer – you (the taxpayer). You can view my legislative accomplishments here, my expenditures here (I do not participate in the state pension or Senate health care plans, do not have a state-owned vehicle and do not expense mileage to commute to and from the state Capitol and around the district), and ways to connect with me. Standing Together for LifeEarlier this week, the March for Life at the state Capitol was a powerful reminder of the hope and strength found when people unite to protect the lives of the most vulnerable. It was inspiring to see so many come together, including many of our neighbors from across York County, to affirm the value and dignity of every life. You can view photos from the event here. Celebrating Eagle Scout Jacob McCravenCongratulations to Jacob McCraven of Troop 24 in New Freedom on achieving the rank of Eagle Scout – the highest honor in Scouting. Jacob is the son of John Liszewski and Bree McCraven. For his Eagle Scout community service project, Jacob renovated the New Freedom Cemetery maintenance shed, transforming it into a functional office space that will serve the community for years to come. It was a pleasure to present Jacob with a congratulatory citation from the Senate of Pennsylvania. His hard work, leadership, and dedication are inspiring, and I wish him continued success in all of his future endeavors! Honoring POW-MIA Recognition DayIt was an honor to stand with Rep. Kate Klunk and the Hanover Allied Veterans Council at the POW-MIA Memorial in Codorus State Park to remember the men and women who endured captivity or remain missing in action. This solemn and meaningful occasion served as a powerful reminder that freedom is not free. Some endured years of captivity, and others never returned home. It is our responsibility to honor their sacrifice, support efforts to bring every last one of them home, and provide closure to the families who still wait. Reporting School Threats AnonymouslyAnother school year is underway, and the Safe2Say Something program is available to train students and school employees how to recognize warning signs from individuals who may be a threat to themselves or others, and to anonymously report the threat before it is too late. Once a tip is reported, a crisis center assesses it and sends it to school administrators and/or law enforcement for intervention. This youth violence prevention program is run by the Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General. Since 2019, the Safe2Say Something tipline has received more than 178,000 tips covering threats to schools, bullying and potential self-harm. Park Hills Elementary Welcomes National Ambassador for Young People’s LiteratureThe students at Park Hills Elementary were thrilled to welcome Mac Barnett, the Library of Congress’ National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature. Mac, an award-winning author of more than 60 children’s books, captivated the students as he read one of his works during the visit. It was an honor for Park Hills Elementary, part of the South Western School District, to be one of only five schools in the nation selected to host this special event. You can find more photos from this event on my Facebook page.
