Honoring Our Heroes this Memorial Day

This Memorial Day weekend, I was humbled to take part in several powerful moments of reflection and remembrance across York County – each one a solemn reminder of the sacrifice made by generations of brave Americans in defense of our freedom.

The weekend began at the Eight Annual Benefit Custom Car & Bike Show, hosted by York County Veterans Outreach. I had the profound honor of introducing and interviewing this year’s Grand Marshal, Sgt. Howard “Bud” Pressel, Jr., a true American hero.

Sgt. Pressel served as a tail gunner in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. On Feb. 7, 1945, his B-24 Liberator was shot down over Austria. He was wounded during the bailout, captured, and held in a German POW camp until liberated by Gen. George Patton’s forces. Earlier this year, at age 101, Sgt. Pressel was finally awarded the Purple Heart, more than 80 years after his incredible act of service. His story is one of courage, perseverance, and devotion to country. I am grateful to all who came out to support this moving event that raises funds for local veterans and their families.

On Sunday, I joined East Prospect Borough for their Memorial Day Remembrance Service, where the community came together to reflect on the true meaning of the day. It was a time to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of American values and liberties.

Memorial Day was spent with the Hanover Allied Veterans Council and members of the greater Hanover community, followed by a remembrance ceremony in Wrightsville alongside the American Legion Post 369. At each gathering, we bowed our heads, raised our flags, and renewed our commitment to live lives worthy of the sacrifice made by our fallen heroes.

To all who welcomed me into their communities this weekend to honor our heroes, thank you. May we never forget the price paid for our freedom, and may we strive each day to honor their legacy.

New Survey: Do You Support Streamlining Government Permitting Process?

It should not be harder to track a state permit than an Amazon package. I want YOUR thoughts on how we can make Pennsylvania’s permitting process even more transparent, accountable, and competitive. Please take a moment to share your feedback in my new permitting reform survey!

Fawn Grove Elementary Students Recognized for Patriotism

Congratulations to all of the outstanding students at Fawn Grove Elementary School who completed the 2025 Patriot Program!

This year marked a record number of student participants, and it was inspiring to see so many young individuals demonstrate such strong character, responsibility, and love for our country. From reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to showcasing the values of good citizenship, these students embodied the American spirit of service, respect, and community pride.

You can find more photos from this even on my Instagram.

Celebrating the Class of 2025

Last week, Rick and I had the pleasure of attending York College’s 2025 commencement ceremony alongside proud families, friends, faculty, and community members to celebrate the achievements of this year’s graduating class. Pennsylvania Attorney General, York County’s own Dave Sunday, delivered a powerful and motivating commencement address.

To all the graduates across York County, whether you are heading into the workforce, continuing your education, or taking time to explore what is next, congratulations on this major milestone! Your hard work, dedication, and commitment to your future is something to be celebrated!

Bill to Increase Firefighters in PA Receives Senate Support

Pennsylvania relies on volunteer firefighters, but their numbers are dropping – from 300,000 in the 1970s to fewer than 38,000 today. To help ensure there are enough firefighters to respond to a crisis, the Senate passed a bill that would reform the process for people earning their firefighter certification.

Senate Bill 90 would maintain the high standards to become a firefighter while making it less intimidating for men and women who are interested in serving their communities as volunteer firefighters. Currently, firefighter applicants must complete four training modules totaling 188 hours. They then must pass a cumulative test covering all four modules. The bill would allow them to be tested following each of the four modules.

Senate Bill 90 heads to the House of Representatives for further consideration.

Prevent Surprises on the Road with PennDOT’s Construction Plans

As the weather improves, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is spending more time maintaining the state’s approximately 40,000 roadway miles and 25,400 bridges.

You can be aware of and plan for delays you experience driving by checking the status of construction projects in your area. Information about projects underway, beginning and being bid this year is listed here.

Road work projects are chosen through an extended planning process in four-year and 12-year increments. Learn more about the State Transportation Improvement Plan and the Twelve-Year Program.

Beware of Counterfeit Weight Loss and Diabetes Drugs

If you purchase GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic, which are typically used for weight loss and diabetes, anywhere other than a licensed pharmacy, you could be buying counterfeit products.

As supplies have not kept pace with overwhelming consumer demand, a counterfeit market has emerged for these drugs. Using counterfeit products is dangerous.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Sunday is urging consumers to report suspicious products by calling the Drugs Tip Line at 800-442-8006. Read more.

Enjoy a Great American Getaway in PA

Tourism is an important part of Pennsylvania’s economy. In 2022, the most recent year with available data, we welcomed more than 192 million travelers and benefited from $45 billion in visitor spending.

The commonwealth has a lot to offer, even for our community who gets to call this state our home! From scenic trails and historical landmarks to charming small towns and seasonal festivals, there’s no shortage of places to explore.

One of my favorite summertime traditions is the PA Ice Cream Trail. Any excuse to stop by Perrydell Farm for a scoop of Coffee by the Sea is a good one!
