York County Awarded $2.1 Million for New Public Safety Training Facility

Last week, I announced that more than $2.1 million in state funding for the Fire Chiefs’ and Fire Fighters’ Association of York County to construct a new, modern training facility at the York County Public Safety Training Center. This funding, provided through the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP), will help build a state-of-the-art facility designed to elevate training and preparedness for our county’s fire and emergency personnel.

Our firefighters and first responders put their lives on the line every day, and they deserve access to the best resources and training. This new facility will be essential in ensuring they have the skills needed to respond effectively and protect our communities.

The two-story building will replace outdated structures, offering expanded space for apparatus, equipment storage, decontamination, administrative offices, and flexible classrooms. It will also feature a fire sprinkler system and a large-capacity elevator for accessibility. This project is a major step forward in supporting our first responders and their commitment to keeping York County safe. You can learn more about this funding here.

Local Veterans Head to National Air and Space Museum for Trip

This week, more than 350 local veterans and their guests kicked off the start of Veterans Day events with a special trip to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center at the National Air and Space Museum in Chantilly, VA. Thanks to Bailey Coach and eight sponsoring organizations from York County, this free event offers veterans an unforgettable day of exploring the museum’s exhibits.

The day began at the York Fairground’s Horticultural Hall with a heartfelt welcome from WWII Veteran Quentin Stambaugh, who flew 39 combat missions. This marked the first of several events honoring our veterans throughout the weekend. A big thank you to Bailey Coach for making this meaningful trip possible every year.

New DMAP Unit to Help Monitor Chronic Wasting Disease

A new Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) unit has been established in York County to help manage Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). DMAP Unit 7307, covering 29,440 acres near Black Rock, includes parts of Jefferson Borough and Codorus, Heidelberg, Manheim, North Codorus, Penn and West Manheim townships.

Hunters can purchase additional antlerless deer permits for $10.97 each, with up to two permits available per hunter. The permits help the Game Commission monitor CWD by allowing hunters to harvest and submit deer for testing. Most land in the unit is privately owned, so hunters must get landowner permission before hunting.

For more information, visit the Game Commission’s interactive CWD map here.

New Law Makes Workers’ Comp More Efficient

The Pennsylvania Workers’ Compensation system will be more efficient because of legislation unanimously passed by Senate Republicans that is now law.

Act 126 of 2024 moves more benefit payments from paper checks to direct deposit. Individuals entitled to compensation may request funds be deposited into an account of their choosing. The law also allows insurers to no longer have to offer paper checks as a payment as long as the individual has a bank account that accepts direct deposit.

The reforms, which are also more cost-effective, were unanimously recommended by the Workers’ Compensation Advisory Council.

Shooting Ranges Open to the Public

Whether you’re a hunter preparing for rifle season or would simply like to maintain your shooting skills for self-defense, you can take aim at a public shooting range.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission offers recreation opportunities at public rifle, pistol, archery and shotgun ranges on 40 state game lands throughout the state. It constructed or renovated more than a dozen public shooting ranges this year alone, with plans to upgrade more.

You must possess an annual shooting range permit or a current general hunting or furtaker license to use the public shooting ranges. Find a shooting range near you.

Fish and Boat Commission is Accepting Boating Facility Grant Applications

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has two grant opportunities for qualifying organizations to capitalize on the surge in new boating activity.

The Boating Facility Grant Program provides grants for planning, acquisition, development, expansion and rehabilitation of public boating facilities on PA waterways. Townships, boroughs and municipal and county governments can learn more and apply online by Nov. 30.

The Recruitment, Retention and Reactivation (R3) Grant Program will reimburse up to $25,000 for eligible expenses that support R3-related educational programs and increase learning opportunities for anglers and boaters. Learn more and apply online by Dec. 6.

Cold Weather Life Jacket Reminder for Boaters

From November 1 to April 30, life jackets are mandatory for all boaters on Pennsylvania waters. This rule applies to boats under 16 feet, as well as kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards.

Cold water shock can be dangerous, and even if the air feels warm, water temperatures can quickly cause hypothermia. Wearing a life jacket is essential for safety during these colder months.

Recognizing the Selfless Sacrifice of Veterans

Originally known as Armistice Day, Veterans Day is a time to honor the brave men and women who have selflessly served our country to preserve the freedoms we hold dear.

We also recognize the families who have stood by them, knowing their loved ones could be in harm’s way and may not return home. The sacrifices made by our veterans and their families are the highest form of patriotism.

In observance, our office will be closed. I encourage us all take a moment to reflect on and appreciate the dedication and sacrifice of our nation’s heroes.

Additionally, each month, I share Veteran-specific updates via email with our community. If you or someone you know would like to receive these updates, please sign up here.

Upcoming PennDOT Maintenance Projects

Most weeks, PennDOT provides me with its upcoming maintenance schedule. While my team and I aim to keep this information up to date, please note that the page may not always reflect the latest changes. For the most accurate details, I recommend checking back on Friday afternoons or over the weekend, as we usually receive updates from PennDOT on Fridays. You can view the full list here to see if any roadwork might impact you and your family.
