Midstate Hotspot for Human Trafficking – Here is How We Are Fighting It

Hands reaching out seeking help, with text that reads: Fighting Human Trafficking in PA with Sen. Cris Dush

Sen. Cris Dush joins me on my latest episode of “Kristin’s Corner” – a podcast I host to talk about important state and local topics. Sen. Dush founded the Anti-Human Trafficking Caucus after attending many events that highlighted how south central Pennsylvania continues to be a hotspot for human trafficking.

We discuss how to fight this heinous crime by pursuing new laws, as well as by harnessing groups that are on the front lines either fighting human trafficking or supporting victims, like Sparrow Place.

You can listen to our discussion on Apple, Spotify, and YouTube.

Shop Electric Rates before June 1 Price Hikes Kick In

Infogram showing the cost of electricity and energy usage

The Public Utility Commission is reminding homeowners and renters to shop rates before June 1 – as rate hikes are set to take effect.

Per the PUC, electric distribution companies (EDCs) will adjust their “Price to Compare” (PTC). This is the cost per kilowatt-hour (kWh) charged to customers who have not selected a competitive electric generation supplier. These prices are based on wholesale market rates and can significantly impact monthly bills.

Note: These changes only affect customers receiving “default service” from their electric utility. Customers shopping with a supplier will continue paying the generation price set by their contract, but they should also be aware of these broader market trends to prepare for potential impacts when their current contract ends.

In our region, Met-Ed will increase its rates by 7.6% (from 12.965¢ to 13.951¢), PPL will increase its rates by 1.5% (12.953¢ to 13.147¢), and PECO will increase its rates by 4.97% (11.024¢ to 11.572¢). Prices are in kilowatt hours.

It is why I am sponsoring legislation that would make it easier for consumers to switch electricity (and natural gas) suppliers and require default utilities to be more transparent with the costs we pay in our utility bills. This would require the disclosure of the cost to build out transmission lines that connect Pennsylvania electricity generation to our energy negligent neighbors.

It’s true, we subsidize transmission lines that connect Pennsylvania-based power plants to Maryland and Virginia.

Last month, I spoke with Maryland Delegate Kathy Szeliga on my podcast about the crazy rates Marylanders are paying and how I am concerned that Gov. Josh Shapiro’s answer is to hire a special counsel from Maryland to address energy affordability. You can listen to the full episode on Spotify, Apple or YouTube.

Replacing Illegible License Plates in Hanover

Rep. Kate Klunk and Sen. Kristin Phililps-Hill take a picture with two Hanover Borough Police Department Officers

Thank you to the Hanover Borough Police Department for partnering with Rep. Kate Klunk and me this week for our license plate replacement event. I host events like this across southern York County to help local motorists swap out illegible license plates for new plates.

Thank You to Students and Teachers at St. John the Baptist Catholic School

Sen. Kristin Phillips-Hill participates in a forum with K-6 students of St. John the Baptist Catholic School

I had a great visit with students from kindergarten through sixth grade at St. John the Baptist Catholic School in New Freedom. It was a wonderful opportunity to have an open dialogue with such inquisitive students and answer several of their questions while explaining my duties and responsibilities as their state senator.

Thank you so much to the faculty at St. John the Baptist for the hospitality. Speaking of faculty, I also congratulated principal Michelle Williams and kindergarten teacher Dana Baker for being named Golden Apple Educators by the Diocese of Harrisburg. Their commitment to her students’ academic success and faith journey are to be celebrated, and it was an honor to present them with congratulatory citations from the Senate of Pennsylvania for their outstanding achievements. This award is only provided to six teachers and one principal each year. Congratulations!

A Seat for Friendship and Remembrance

Sen. Kristin Phillips-Hill congratulates Natalie Voight on the completion of her Girl Scout project

Kinleigh Connelly was taken from this Earth far too soon. Her friend, Natalie Voight, refused to let grief and sorrow prevail. As a member of Girl Scout Troop 80116, Natalie designed, raised funds, sought school administration approval, and constructed a bench in her friend’s memory.

The bench sits in the lobby of the West Manheim Elementary School, part of the South Western School District, for friends to gather before, during, and after school. I was grateful to join the entire community to thank Natalie for remembering her friend and providing her peers with a bench for friends to gather in Kinleigh’s honor.

June Mobile Office Hours to Feature PA Fish & Boat Commission Conservation Officer

I am happy to announce that in June, our mobile office hours will feature a Waterways Conservation Officer from the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission!

The conservation officer will be available to help answer general questions regarding boating and water safety, launch permits, and fishing regulations. The office can also provide details on when and where you can cast a line or launch your boat in Pennsylvania.

This is a great opportunity to ask questions and to get better acquainted with your Waterways Conservation Officers.

Below are my June mobile office hours:

York County History Center to Play Big Part in America 250

Sen. Kristin Phillips-Hill with several members of the York County History Center board

As America turns its attention over the next several weeks to celebrating its 250th birthday, York County is ready for the upcoming semiquincentennial celebration!

For nine months in 1777-78, Continental Congress called York home. It was here that the Articles of Confederation were adopted.

Last week, we held a Legislative Leadership Conversation at the York County History Center to discuss the upcoming celebration of our nation’s birthday and how York is poised to showcase its significant contributions to the founding of the United States.

You can learn more here.

Federal Assistance via U.S. Senator McCormick’s team on June 11 at District Office

Graphic with U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick for mobile office hours

Speaking of resources, I often hear from our neighbors about assistance on federal-related matters. I am pleased to host members of U.S. Senator Dave McCormick’s team at our district office Thursday, June 11 from 9 a.m.  to 4:30 p.m.

This event is an opportunity for constituents to receive in-person assistance with federal issues, which include Social Security, Medicare, VA, passports, IRS concerns, and other federal agencies.

No appointments are needed and walk-ins are welcome!

Senator McCormick’s mobile office hours program is designed to make federal services more accessible for Pennsylvanians, especially for our neighbors in southern York County.

I am happy to partner with his team to bring these federal resources directly to our community.

Hearing Examines Bill Ensuring Lead-Free Drinking Water in Schools

Two drinking water fountains along a wall

A recent Senate hearing examined legislation to ensure Pennsylvania students have access to safe, lead-free drinking water in schools.

The Senate Institutional Sustainability and Innovation Committee discussed Senate Bill 759, which would require school districts to replace outdated drinking fountains with lead-filtering hydration stations by 2028 while providing funding mechanisms to help schools cover implementation costs.

Committee members heard testimony from experts in environmental advocacy, public health, plumbing and pediatric medicine on the dangers of lead exposure and the need for preventative action in schools across Pennsylvania.

Watch the hearing and read testimony here. Read more about the hearing and Senate Bill 759 here.
