In this update:
Honoring Those Who Gave AllMemorial Day is a time to pause as a nation and honor the memory of Americans who left their hometowns and laid down their lives in service to our country. Their sacrifice is a debt we can never fully repay. We owe it to them to tell their stories and do our part as citizens of this great nation to ensure they did not die in vain. My monthly Veterans email update will go out tomorrow (Friday) morning, listing several events around southern York County that will pay tribute to our heroes. Sign up for the update here by selecting “News for Veterans.” Latest Podcast Episode Looks at Tackling Human Trafficking Issues Impacting MidstateMy latest podcast episode looks into the challenges that continue to persist with human trafficking in the midstate and across the commonwealth. My colleague, Sen. Cris Dush, who founded the Anti-Human Trafficking Caucus joins me to talk about why a new bicameral, bipartisan effort to combat human trafficking is critical to ending this horrific industry in Pennsylvania. You can listen to our discussion on Apple, Spotify, and YouTube. Grand Opening of Wagner-Elfner-Burg Funeral Home in Red Lion
This past weekend, I was honored to join Rep. Wendy Fink for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Wagner-Elfner-Burg Funeral Home and Crematory Services in Red Lion. While no one likes to say goodbye to a loved one, friend, or coworker, this new space will help celebrate the lives of those we love who pass away far too soon. Congratulations to Katherine, Nathan, and your entire team on this milestone achievement. Ending State Funding for Gender Transition of ChildrenLegislation to end state funding for the gender transition of children was approved by the Senate Banking and Insurance Committee. As a member of this committee, I voted in support of this bill. The measure follows recent guidance from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services stating gender-related medical interventions for minors do not meet professionally recognized standards of care. Senate Bill 1321 would require the state to withhold Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program funding for any procedure conflicting with federal standards. At least half of U.S. states have passed similar laws. The U.K. banned the use of puberty blockers and sex-reassignment surgeries for minors in 2024. The measure now heads to the full Senate for consideration. Read more about Senate Bill 1321. New Medical and Health Professional Loans Support Graduate StudentsThe Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency has launched a new Medical and Health Professional Loan Program to support graduate students in medical, dental, veterinarian and health professional studies. The program features deferred repayment during residency, fellowship, internship, research and other clinical training, and the potential for reduced reliance on co-signers. This initiative helps fill critical, specialized positions to serve citizens across the commonwealth. Medical students can apply here. Other health-related students can apply here. Students pursuing advanced degrees in other areas of study can apply here. Celebrating Red Lion FFA GraduatesThis week, several Red Lion seniors were celebrated during the annual Red Lion FFA Dessert Banquet. These young men and women completed the FFA program and will graduate into the workforce or pursue higher education. York County is home to some of the best FFA programs, and Red Lion is no exception. It was an honor to watch these bright individuals complete the FFA program. I know this is not the last we will see of these graduates. I look forward to seeing what is in store for them in their future endeavors. You can view more photos from the event on Instagram. Sneak Peak: York Art Association’s New HomeRoth Preap, who leads the York Art Association, gave me a tour of the former Little Green Church, which will be the new home of the art association. This new space will take a piece of our county’s history and give it new life by adding several gallery spaces, classrooms, and relocating the Susant Hantz Wolf Sculpture Garden. You can view more photos from our tour on Instagram. REMINDER: Does Your License Plate Need to be Replaced? Join Rep. Klunk and Me on TuesdayIf your license plate is hard to read because it is peeling, blistering, fading, or discolored, you may qualify for a free replacement. On Tuesday, May 26, from 5-7 p.m., I will be teaming up with Rep. Kate Klunk to host a license plate replacement event at 118 Carlisle St. in Hanover (Rep. Klunk’s district office). Local law enforcement officers will be on-site to inspect license plates and determine if they meet PennDOT’s criteria for replacement. If your plate qualifies, a new one will be mailed directly to your home. All attendees must bring a valid driver’s license and current vehicle registration. If more than one person is listed on the registration, each individual must be present with their own license to complete the process and avoid delays. Please note, the traditional blue, white, and yellow Pennsylvania plate has officially been retired and the new standard “Let Freedom Ring” plates will be provided during this event. This event is open to all local citizens, and I encourage everyone with a worn or damaged plate to take advantage of this convenient opportunity. You can find more information on Facebook.
