If you know a Veteran, please forward this issue to him or her as it provides important updates, resources, and information. In this Update:
Honoring Your Service This Veterans DayTo every Veteran reading this, thank you. Your service, your sacrifice, and your commitment to something greater than yourself have strengthened our nation and our communities. Whether your time in uniform was during peacetime or conflict, at home or abroad, your willingness to stand up for our country will always be honored. Veterans Day is a time for reflection, but it is also a time to make sure you know how appreciated you are here in York County. Our community is fortunate to be home to thousands of Veterans who continue to serve as leaders, mentors, neighbors, volunteers, and examples of courage. As a small token of appreciation, many local businesses and organizations are offering free meals, discounts, and special events to Veterans and active-duty service members. If you or someone you know could benefit, here is a helpful guide to what is being offered across our region. Thank you again for your service to our country, today and every day. We are grateful. Send-Off for Our York County VeteransThis week I joined the send-off of the annual All Vets Trip, a tradition that continues to bring together Veterans from across York County for a day of reflection, connection, and shared stories. Thank you to Bailey Coach for its continued partnership in making this trip possible year after year. The support ensures that our Veterans can come together in fellowship and honor their service in a meaningful way. It was an honor to see WWII Veteran Quentin Stambaugh, who recently received his long-overdue Purple Heart. His presence is a powerful reminder of the courage and sacrifice carried across generations of service members. You can find more photos from the send-off here. Ensuring U.S. and Pennsylvania Flags Are Made in AmericaThe Senate approved legislation that would ensure all Pennsylvania and United States flags purchased with taxpayer dollars for public display are made right here in the United States. Senate Bill 784 requires any flag bought by the commonwealth to be manufactured in America and clearly labeled “Made in the USA.” This includes flags displayed at state buildings, schools, local government offices, and other public facilities. The bill now heads to the House of Representatives for consideration. Flying our flag is a symbol of pride, unity, and shared history. This measure ensures that when we honor our nation and our commonwealth, we are also supporting American jobs, American manufacturing, and the values these flags represent. This legislation is now in the House of Representatives for consideration. Expanding Eligibility for Free Hunting Licenses for Disabled VeteransNew legislation has been introduced to ensure more of Pennsylvania’s disabled Veterans have access to the outdoor activities they love. Under current law, only Veterans who are 100% disabled due to combat-related injuries are eligible for free Pennsylvania hunting licenses. Senate Bill 1020 expands eligibility to include Veterans who are 100% disabled due to service-connected injuries incurred outside of combat such as those sustained during training, non-combat missions, or other hazardous duties. The bill would also provide discounted $1 hunting licenses to Veterans who are partially disabled due to service-related injuries. Hunting is a meaningful outlet for connection, recreation, and wellness. Ensuring more of our disabled Veterans can continue to enjoy outdoor traditions is one small way we can honor their service and sacrifice. U.S. Marine Corps 250th Birthday Celebration at the CapitolMy colleague, Sen. Robinson, will host a special ceremony at the Pennsylvania Capitol on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 9:00 a.m. to commemorate the 250th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. All active-duty Marines, veterans, and their families are invited to attend. The event will feature guest speakers, historic Marine Corps artwork, and the traditional cake-cutting ceremony. You can RSVP here. Upcoming Mobile Office Hours with Veterans Affairs RepresentativeOur office is pleased to share that a representative from York County Veterans Affairs will join us during our Mobile Office Hours to assist local veterans and their families. Join us on Thursday, November 20 at the Penn Township Municipal Building located at 20 Wayne Ave. in Hanover from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Veterans Job ListingEvery week, the Pennsylvania Nation Guard Association updates its free job board with good openings for National Guard members, Veterans and their families across Pennsylvania and in nearby states. The board features nearly 10,000 employment and internship postings. What are Vet Centers?VA Vet centers provide free and confidential readjustment counseling for war-zone Veterans and their families, from World War II to the current Global War on Terror. Vet centers are small, non-medical, counseling centers conveniently located in our region. They’re staffed by highly trained counselors and team members dedicated to seeing you through the challenges that come with managing life during and after the military. Whether you come in for one-on-one counseling or to participate in a group session, at Vet centers you can form social connections, try new things and build a support system with people who understand you and want to help you succeed. Who is Eligible to Receive Services at Vet Centers?Vet center services are available to Veterans at no cost, regardless of discharge character, and without the need to be enrolled in VA health care or having a service-connected disability. If you are a Veteran or service member, including members of the National Guard and Reserve, you can access Vet center services if you:
Contacting Your Local Vet CenterEven if you are unsure if you meet the criteria to receive services from a Vet center, please contact a center. Center services are also available to family members when their participation would support the growth and goals of the Veteran or active-duty service member. If you consider them family, so does your local center. Bereavement services are also available to family members of Veterans who were receiving Vet center services at the time of the Veteran’s death, and to the families of service members who died while serving on active duty.
