Happy Thanksgiving!

Did you know Pennsylvania has a unique connection to Thanksgiving’s history? The first nationally recognized Thanksgiving was celebrated right here in York County in 1777. After the American victory at the Battle of Saratoga, the Second Continental Congress, convening in York, declared a National Day of Thanksgiving to celebrate this pivotal triumph. Later, in 1920, Pennsylvania also hosted the first Thanksgiving Day parade, four years before Macy’s launched its now-famous celebration.

As we approach Thanksgiving Day, I want to take a moment to thank each of you. Our ongoing conversations are a cornerstone of what makes our community strong. These discussions help me serve you better as your state senator.

While we may not always see eye-to-eye on every issue, I truly believe there is far more that unites us than divides us as York Countians, Pennsylvanians, and Americans.

This Thanksgiving, as you gather with loved ones, I hope your tables are full, your hearts are warm, and your homes are filled with gratitude and joy.

From my family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!

Supporting Small Businesses This Holiday Season

This Saturday, Nov. 30, marks Small Business Saturday, a day dedicated to celebrating the role small businesses play in our communities. With more than 1.1 million small businesses in Pennsylvania employing 2.5 million people, their contributions to our economy and neighborhoods are invaluable. The holiday season is a perfect time to shop small and make a big impact locally!

I’m honored to have been named a 2024 Guardian of Small Business by the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). This recognition – awarded to only five state senators – highlights my commitment to supporting policies that empower small businesses, foster growth, and create opportunities for entrepreneurs.

Small businesses are the heartbeat of our communities. They support local charities, sponsor our kids’ Little League teams, and create meaningful connections in our neighborhoods. By shopping small, you help keep money in our local economy and support the neighbors and friends who make York County a great place to live.

The state offers helpful information for people who are considering starting or expanding their business. Learn more about writing a business plan, registering your business, and choosing a business structure.

Thank you for supporting small businesses and helping our community thrive!

Unelected Federal Bureaucrats Approve Controversial Permit, Threatening York County Farmers

At last week’s Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) meeting, unelected federal officials approved Yes Energy Storage LLC’s preliminary permit application for a pumped storage facility, a move that poses serious risks to York County farmers and our region’s preserved farmland.

In response to the decision, I released the following statement:

“The unelected bureaucrats at FERC made it crystal clear that one of the Biden Administration’s last acts in office will be to green light a project that will destroy lives and livelihoods in southern York County. What message are we sending when we reward irresponsible policies and punish the very people who put food on our tables? When neighboring states continue to consume more energy than they generate, it puts an unnecessary and irresponsible burden on Pennsylvania to come up with the difference. I look forward to working with the Trump Administration to put an end to this project that has the potential to eliminate preserved and pristine farmland from the map for good, as well as detrimentally impact electric generation already occurring along the Susquehanna River.”

This decision highlights the challenges we face in protecting our agricultural heritage and energy resources. I remain committed to standing with our farmers and fighting for policies that prioritize their livelihoods and the future of our region.

Thank You for a Successful Christmastime in Loganville!

Thank you to everyone who visited our district office during Christmastime in Loganville this weekend! It was wonderful to see some familiar faces and welcome new ones! The discussions on key issues impacting our community were insightful, and as always, the train display was a crowd favorite.

A special congratulations to the winners of the 2024 PA State Capitol Ornament contest, Scott S. of Loganville, and Louise B. of Glen Rock! These ornaments are created each year to support the Pennsylvania Capitol Preservation Committee, which works to preserve and maintain the beauty and history of our state Capitol. Please note, ornaments were not paid for with taxpayer dollars.

You can find out more about the ornament here.

Mark your calendars for the 40th anniversary of this holiday tradition next year!

Learning About Leadership with Pack 50’s Webelos Scouts

I joined Pack 50 of Spry Church to meet with their Webelos scouts for their “My Community” adventure. We discussed what it means to serve our community, how government works, and my role as an elected official.

The scouts were engaged and eager to learn, asking thoughtful questions and sharing their ideas. It’s inspiring to see these young leaders take an interest in public service and their community.

Thank you, Pack 50, for inviting me to be part of this meaningful experience!

YCEA Highlighting the Importance of Small-Town Investments

Last week, I attended a discussion panel hosted by the York County Economic Alliance (YCEA), focused on the importance of investing in our small-town communities. The event featured local leaders who are driving innovation and economic growth across York County.

Panelists included Jordan Ilyes of Ilyes Holdings LLC, Ethan Greer of Taqueria El Camino, Greer’s Burger Garage & The Franklin Street Social, and Oliver Hoar of Hoar Investments and the Hanover Economic Development Corporation. These visionary leaders shared how they are attracting new businesses, creating job opportunities, and revitalizing our local economies.

It’s inspiring to see the collaborative efforts that are shaping the future of our region. By investing in our small towns, we’re building stronger, more vibrant communities for generations to come.

Thank you to the YCEA for organizing this meaningful event and to the panelists for their dedication to making York County a hub of opportunity and growth!

Regular Firearms Deer Season Begins Nov. 30

Regular firearms season runs from Nov. 30 to Dec. 14 in most areas of the state. Certain wildlife management units (WMUs) offer additional hunting opportunities. WMUs 2B, 5C and 5D have an extended season from Dec. 26 to Jan. 25, 2025. WMUs 4A, 4D and 5A have an extended season from Jan. 2-20, 2025.

Pennsylvania hunters have shared their deer harvest since 1991, helping Hunters Sharing the Harvest (HSH) distribute 2.5 million pounds of venison. Hunters can drop off a whole field-dressed deer at a participating processor. There is no fee to donate a deer.

In an average hunting season, HSH hopes to provide the state’s food banks with 100,000 pounds of processed venison. The food banks then re-distribute the meat to more than 5,000 local provider charities such as food pantries, missions, homeless shelters, Salvation Army facilities and churches. Hunters’ donations help combat food insecurity, which more than 1.6 million Pennsylvanians currently experience.

Upcoming PennDOT Maintenance Projects

Most weeks, PennDOT provides me with its upcoming maintenance schedule. While my team and I aim to keep this information up to date, please note that the page may not always reflect the latest changes. For the most accurate details, I recommend checking back on Friday afternoons or over the weekend, as we usually receive updates from PennDOT on Fridays. You can view the full list here to see if any roadwork might impact you and your family.
