New Podcast: On the Right Track

As the summer heat winds down and we look ahead to fall, it’s the perfect time to lace up your shoes or hop on your bike and enjoy York County’s incredible trail system. From the Heritage Rail Trail to the expanding Hanover Trolley Trail, our trails connect communities, boost local economies, and preserve the rich history of our community.

In my latest podcast, On the Right Track, I sat down with Gwen Loose and Frank Kempf from the York County Rail Trail Authority to talk about the vision behind our trail network. We discussed the recent milestone of opening a new section of the Hanover Trolley Trail in Heidelberg Township, the growth of trail towns like Glen Rock and New Freedom, and how these projects are creating opportunities in communities like Hanover and Spring Grove.

You can find our full conversation on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple.

Shredding & Drug Take Back Event Coming Sept. 20

I am teaming up with the Pennsylvania State Police to host a Shredding & Drug Take Back Event on Saturday, Sept. 20, from 9 a.m. – noon at the PSP York Barracks located at 101 N Main St., in York.

This event gives citizens the opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted prescription drugs and securely shred personal documents. By participating, you can help protect your identity, reduce the risk of prescription drug misuse, and support a safer community.

Acceptable Items for Shredding:

  • Envelopes
  • Fax paper
  • File folders
  • Green bar
  • Staples and paper clips are okay with papers

Items Not Accepted:

I encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to clean out old files and medications in a safe and responsible way.

Supporting Local Businesses in Hanover

I recently joined the York County Economic Alliance (YCEA) and other community partners in Downtown Hanover to visit local businesses, including Dawg Gone Bees, Wren & Bluebird Boutique, Style Line Kitchens, The Cultivated Collective, and Four Corners Comics & Games.

It was a great opportunity to connect with business owners, hear their perspectives, and share resources available to support their growth.

Improving Health Care

The Senate approved several measures this year to improve the delivery of health care in our communities.

Among the new laws we passed was a measure establishing a statewide stroke registry to deliver vital information to EMS providers and hospitals, ensuring the best treatment possible. Other laws aim to reduce overdose deaths by incorporating real-time reporting by EMS providers into the statewide overdose mapping system, giving EMS personnel permanent authority to leave behind a dose of naloxone at overdose scenes by placing this lifesaving medication in the hands of a caregiver or loved one.

Critical measures passed by the Senate and awaiting action in the House of Representatives include bills to strengthen Pennsylvania’s no-cost breast cancer screening law by ensuring diagnostic imaging is fully covered, and preserving prescription drug coverage for more than 10,000 seniors.

You can review other measures we passed to improve health care and address other subjects here.

Manufacturing Matters in York County

It was a pleasure to join MANTEC for their Manufacturing Matters event at RG Group in York. The tour offered a great opportunity to see firsthand the strength of York County’s manufacturing sector and the positive impact it has on our community!

New Law Streamlines Fishing Licenses for Disabled Veterans

A new law we passed earlier this year is now in effect removing the annual fishing license fee and application for veterans with 100% disability.

Previously, only those disabled veterans with a 100% permanent disability determination from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs could receive free lifetime fishing licenses. Disabled veterans with a 100% disability determination also receive free licenses but must apply for them on an annual basis.

Act 21 of 2025 takes away the annual fee and application part of the process and allows all disabled veterans with a 100% disability determination, whether or not it is a permanent determination, to purchase free lifetime fishing licenses.

If you or someone you know would benefit from Veteran specific updates, I encourage you to sign up for my monthly Veterans E-Newsletter here.

Building Pathways for Reentry Success

At this year’s York County Reentry Coalition Annual Meeting, the theme Unified Progress in Reentry highlighted how community, collaboration, and commitment can open doors of opportunity for those returning to society.

Special thanks to executive director Chawna Griffith-Myers, District Attorney Tim Barker, and all who are leading this important work with vision and dedication to strengthening lives and communities here in York County.

Happy Birthday Mr. Wehrly!

Happy 90th Birthday to Charles l. Wehrly! Charlie, founder of Wehrly’s Auction Service, has been a pillar in our community for decades and was inducted into the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association Hall of Fame in 2019. A proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he is admired by all who know him.

It was an honor for the Senate of Pennsylvania to recognize this milestone birthday and celebrate his lasting impact.

Pennsylvania’s School Bus Stopping Law

Students are heading back to class, so we all need to be on the lookout for children around school buses and bus stops.

Some reminders about Pennsylvania’s School Bus Stopping Law:

  • Motorists must stop at least 10 feet away from school buses that have their red lights flashing and stop arm activated.
  • Motorists must stop when they are behind a bus, meeting the bus or approaching an intersection where a bus is stopped.
  • Motorists following or traveling alongside a school bus must also stop until the red lights have stopped flashing, the stop arm is withdrawn, and all children have reached safety.

School districts are permitted to install automated camera systems on buses to enforce the law. You can find more information

Happy Labor Day

Labor Day is a time to celebrate the workers who make our communities thrive while providing for their families. No matter what your vocation or whether you’re an active employee or a retiree, I hope you enter this last stretch of summer with a wonderful holiday weekend!

Upcoming PennDOT Maintenance Projects

Most weeks, PennDOT provides me with its upcoming maintenance schedule. While my team and I aim to keep this information up to date, please note that the page may not always reflect the latest changes. For the most accurate details, I recommend checking back on Friday afternoons or over the weekend, as we usually receive updates from PennDOT on Fridays.
