Join Us May 1 to Replace Your Illegible License Plate

I am teaming up with Reps. Joe D’Orsie and Wendy Fink to host a free License Plate Replacement Event on Thursday, May 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. at York Area United Fire and Rescue, located at 50 Commons Drive in York.

If your license plate is hard to read because it is peeling, blistering, fading, or discolored, you may qualify for a free replacement. Local law enforcement officers will be available to inspect license plates.

My team, along with the offices of Rep. D’Orsie and Rep. Fink, will assist residents in completing the required PennDOT forms on site. If your plate qualifies, a new one will be mailed directly to your home.

Residents with personalized plates will receive a replacement with the same letters and numbers at no cost. If your vehicle has a specialty plate, such as a Wildlife Resource or alumni plate, you will receive the same type of plate unless it is no longer available. In that case, a standard plate will be issued for free. For example, owl plates are no longer available, and otter plates are being replaced with Eastern hellbender plates.

If you have a standard plate but wish to keep the same number, you will need to apply and pay for a personalized plate. This is the only scenario in which a fee applies.

All attendees must bring a valid driver’s license and current vehicle registration. If more than one person is listed on the registration, all individuals must be present and bring their licenses.

This event is open to all residents, and we encourage everyone to stop by and take advantage of this opportunity.

Stocking Local Streams with the Fish and Boat Commission

Earlier this week, I joined the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and a group of dedicated local volunteers to help stock trout in our community’s streams. We began the morning at Muddy Creek Forks near the Ma and Pa Railroad and continued throughout the area, making several stops along the way.

This effort brings together volunteers, anglers, and state officials to ensure that Pennsylvania’s waterways are well stocked and ready for the fishing season. It was a pleasure to speak with the hardworking individuals who donate their time to support this program and to meet residents excited to get outside and cast their lines.

Whether you’re a seasoned angler or someone looking to enjoy the outdoors with family and friends, fishing is a great way to connect with nature and enjoy our local resources. To view the full stocking schedule, purchase a license, or find more information, visit the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s website here.

I’m grateful to everyone who plays a role in preserving this tradition and supporting our outdoor recreation. You can find more photos from the day here.

Celebrating Earth Day with Local Innovation and Sustainability

On Earth Day, I visited Ecore’s facility in York and see firsthand how this local company is turning sustainability into action. It was a pleasure to tour the plant and learn about the innovative process of rubber circularity.

Ecore is transforming end-of-life tires and other materials into performance surfaces that are used in everything from fitness centers to health care facilities. This type of forward-thinking manufacturing is helping our region lead the way in building a circular economy, keeping waste out of landfills and putting it back to work in our communities.

The visit showcased not only an impressive process but also the collaborative spirit that defines our community. From the skilled workforce behind the machines to the leadership driving sustainable goals, it’s clear that innovation and impact go hand in hand.

Thanks to Ecore for opening their doors and for their continued commitment to creating a cleaner, stronger, and more resilient future for all of us.

Students: Apply Now for Grow PA Scholarships and Improve Access for Everyone

People across the state have felt the pain of industries with declining workforces, from the long waits to see a doctor or a skilled mechanic. Senate Republicans took action to address those issues – and to reduce the loss of talent as young adults begin their careers in other states, rarely to return to Pennsylvania.

As part of this year’s state budget, the Grow PA Scholarship Grant Program offers grants of up to $5,000 per year for in-state students who pursue a degree or certification for an in-demand occupation. Qualifying courses of study include agriculture, computer science, business, education, special education, STEM education, engineering, nursing, allied health, criminal justice and other programs approved by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency.

Because the funding is being awarded on a first-come, first-served basis, it’s important to apply as soon as possible. To qualify for the grant, applicants must agree to live and work in Pennsylvania in that occupation after graduation for 12 months for each year they receive the grant. Failure to meet this requirement will result in the grant converting to a loan requiring repayment. Learn more or apply here.

Survey: How Did PennDOT Do This Winter?

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is offering a short survey so motorists can offer their feedback on the winter services PennDOT provided.

Filling out the survey allows you to share your thoughts about where you get information about road conditions, how soon you can expect roads to be safe to travel following a winter storm event and what features you would find useful from 511PA.com.

There is also an opportunity to share additional comments. The survey can be completed anonymously.

ICYMI: PA Women Veterans Register Now for Capitol Ceremony

Pennsylvania women who served in the armed forces have until May 9 to register for a state Capitol ceremony honoring their service on Tuesday, June 10. A virtual display will also be available online and will go live on June 9.

The event will recognize the courage and dedication of Pennsylvania’s women Veterans from World War II to the present. Women Veterans from all branches of the military are encouraged to attend and take part.

The first Women Veterans Day Capitol exhibit took place in 2023, after passage of legislation observing Women Veterans Day in Pennsylvania annually on June 12. New participants are encouraged to share their service stories by completing the required submission form. Veterans featured in last year’s display who wish to participate again may simply update their previous submission.

How to Locate Lost Military Documents

A Veteran’s DD214 is a vital document when it comes to receiving the benefits they deserve. It provides the member and the branch of service with a concise record of a period of time with the armed forces at the time of the member’s separation, discharge or change in military status.

Veterans discharged from 2010 and after can access their own digital records by setting up an account through the VA e-Benefits portal. Veterans who were discharged before then may complete the Standard Form 180, which includes mailing instructions on the last page. They may also visit the National Archives and Records Administration site to submit a signed form electronically.

Anyone who needs assistance is encouraged to call 1-800-547-2838, email RA-REQ@pg.gov or learn more online.

Celebrate Trails Day in York County

Saturday, April 26 is Celebrate Trails Day, a nationwide reminder to get outside and enjoy the incredible network of trails in our communities! Here in York County, we are fortunate to have access to some of the most scenic and well-maintained trails in the state.

From the Heritage Rail Trail to the wooded paths of Rocky Ridge and John Rudy County parks, there’s something for everyone whether you’re looking for a peaceful stroll, a challenging hike, or a family bike ride.

As you make plans to get outdoors this weekend, remember to stay safe and prepared. Cell service can be limited on some trails, so it’s a good idea to map your route ahead of time, bring a friend, monitor the weather, and always stay on marked paths. Let someone know your expected route and return time, especially if you’re venturing out solo.

Celebrate Trails Day is a perfect chance to reconnect with nature, enjoy time with loved ones, and explore the beauty of York County. I hope to see you out on the trail!

Pennsylvania Trivia Night Postponed

Please know, our Pennsylvania Trivia Night has been postponed. Stay tuned for more updates!

Upcoming PennDOT Maintenance Projects

Most weeks, PennDOT provides me with its upcoming maintenance schedule. While my team and I aim to keep this information up to date, please note that the page may not always reflect the latest changes. For the most accurate details, I recommend checking back on Friday afternoons or over the weekend, as we usually receive updates from PennDOT on Fridays. You can view the full list here to see if any roadwork might impact you and your family.
